Ministère de l'Economie et du Commerce extérieur - Direction de la Propriété Intellectuelle (DPI)

Within the Ministry of the Economy and foreign Trade, the Intellectual Property Office ('Direction de la Propriété Intellectuelle') is responsible for any activities relating to patents, trademarks, designs, copyright and related rights.

The DPI is competent in

  • Receiving applications for patents, trademarks, designs, and for certain other forms of protection,
  • Granting national patents and maintaining a register for national and European patents, as well as for PCT applications designating Luxembourg,
  • Carrying out a formal exam and requests regarding national patents, if necessary, a search report from the European Patent Office (EPO) and in granting the national patent without any further patentability examination,
  • Drafting of legislation in the domain of intellectual property,
  • Representing Luxembourg in a great number of EU and international expert committees and in the management organs of international organizations.

In partnership with other organizations, both Luxembourgish and international, the DPI regularly organizes events, such as seminars and exhibitions.
